What is it with blogs and carnivals?

Once again Wayne Hurlbert has set me off on another road of discovery within the blogosphere with his post Carnival of the Vanities at Solomonia. I have scanned over many of his posts concerning the Carnival of the Capitalists but I could never make any sense of the post, let alone what it has to do with a carnival, and quickly moved on to something I could relate to.

So, today I thought I should persevere and try to get to the bottom on the mystery. I started by clicking the Technorati tag "carnivals", and as luck should have it, the first entry gave a big clue:
"The 14th Cavalcade of Canucks is up at My Blahg. This is a weekly roundup of posts by Canadian..."

So, it seems like a carnival, or cavalcade, is a round-up of blog posts on a particular theme. It is starting to make sense now. Clicking through I find this:
"Cavalcade of Canucks is a weekly roundup, posted every Wednesday, of interesting posts from bloggers in Canada. If you want to take part in this, send me an email with a link to the post you want included...."

Thoughts of blatant self promotion cross my mind. Now all I have to do is write something worthy of blatant self promotion.

Checking through some of the posts listed in Cavalcade of Canucks lead me to Do you suffer from the heartbreak of sidebarrhea? which is a very neat name for the problem I wrote about in Monday's rant Blogrolls; who's on and who's off?

So, I guess carnivals are just one more thing to try and keep up with in this world of mass information.

So we're expecting to find your posts on every carnival midway in the blogosphere now, right? :-)
